PGIMER

What is PGIMER?

  • Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research is the acronym for the PGIMER exam.
  • Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh is the Institute conducting this exam, and it was established in 1962 to provide medical education of the highest standard in India.
  • Even The parliament has declared this Institute as the "Institute of Importance" and it holds the second position in the 2018 NIRF Medical List.
  • This is a National Level exam conducted for the admission of Post Graduate level.
  • PGIMER is an online i.e. Computer-based exam conducted only in the English Language.
  • This exam is conducted independently just like the different Medical entrance exams in India for example, AIIMS, JIPMER, and PGI and these exams don't fall under NEET PG.
  • This exam has replaced by INI CET in 2023 and it is solely conducted to get admission into postgraduate (PG) medical studies and education.
Who is eligible?
  • Students who desire to apply for the PGIMER should check the eligibility criteria before applying. The broad eligibility criteria for PGIMER says that,
  • Candidates should hold an MBBS degree from a recognized institute by the Medical Council of India (MCI) and also have completed their required internship.
  • The candidate must be an Indian citizen. If students from out of India want to apply for the PGIMER exam, they will have to obtain permission from the Medical Council of India (MCI).
  • Depending on each course, the Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research, Chandigarh has framed the eligibility criteria and they are as follows,

1. MD/MS

  • Candidates should hold an MBBS degree from a recognized institute by the Medical Council of India (MCI).
  • Candidates must have completed or is in the advancement of completing the required rotatory internship training before joining the course
  • He or She must be a registered candidate with the Central or State Medical Registration Council.

2. MDS

  • Candidates must complete their graduation in Bachelor of Dental Surgery (BDS) from any institute recognized by the Dental Council of India (DCI).
  • He or She must be a registered candidate with the Central or State Dental Council.


Documents Required for PGIMER Application Form

Identity Card: It includes an Aadhaar card, ration card, bank account passbook, passport, or any other government photo ID card.

Personal Details: Personal and communication details include the name of parents, date of birth, permanent and corresponding address, email id, and mobile number.

Images: Scanned copy of recent passport and postcard size photograph, signature, and left thumb impression.

Steps while filling PGIMER Application form

I. PGIMER 2023 New Registration

    A. Click on, the “New Candidate Registration”

    B. Read all the instructions and click Proceed

    C. Fill in required information that is marked with *

    D. If the filled details are correct then click next and tick all the checkboxes, click next.

    E. Choose a Strong Password and re-enter it.

    F. Submit

II. Application Form Filling

    A. Login with your Registration number and password.

    B. Fill in educational information.

    C. Click on Final submit.

    D. Upload Scanned Images of Photograph, Signature, Certificate of Internship, and MBBS Degree or Provisional Certificate

    1. Rules for Photograph

    A. Passport size must be 20Kb to 50Kb.

    B. The photograph must be in white background, focusing on 80% face and ears visible. It must not be with a cap or goggles, spectacles will be allowed only if worn regularly.

    C. Polaroid and Computer-generated photos are not allowed.

    2. Rules for Signature

    A. The Signature of the Candidate must be in his/her running handwriting on White paper with a Black ink pen.

    B. The signature should not be signed in Capital letters and it must be in the range of 5Kb to 20 Kb.

    3. Rules for Internship Certificate

    A. A scanned copy of the Internship Certificate must be used which should range between 50Kb to 300Kb.

    4. Rules for MBBS Degree or Provisional Certificate

    A. A scanned copy of the MBBS Degree or Provisional Certificate must be used which should range between 50Kb to 300Kb.

III. Fee Payment

A. After completing the above steps, you will be redirected automatically to the link for fee payment; you must follow all the instructions & submit the application fee.

B. You can pay through a Debit card/ Credit Card/ Net banking/ E-wallet.

C. Fee Structure to be Paid online

  • General - INR 1500
  • Other Category – INR 1200
  • A person with a Disability - No fees.
IV. Take the printout of the Confirmation Page

A. After the payment of the fee, a candidate may take out a print of the confirmation page.

B. You can keep at least three copies of the confirmation page.

C. If you are a candidate from Jammu & Kashmir who have opted for 15% seats under the All India Quota, must retain a copy of the system-generated Self Declaration.

Exam Pattern of PGIMER 2023

Before applying for any exam, we need to get familiar with Exam patterns. This will not only help you in planning your paper but also keep you mentally prepared. We have jotted down the points that students need to know about Exam Pattern before applying for this exam

  • This exam, PGIMER takes place twice a year; once in January and in July.
  • For the January session the exam takes place in December, while for the July session, the exam takes place in June.
  • The exam is online, an objective type computer-based and it will be available in English only.
  • The duration of the exam is of 3 hours and it consists of 250 questions.
Marking Scheme

    1. The student will be awarded marks for each correct answer.

    2. For every incorrect answer, the mark will be deducted.

    3. If a question is unanswered, no mark will be deducted.

Preparation Tips for PGIMER 2023
  • Students are great at making a plan to crack any exam, but executing the plan or that timetable is a work of strength. You need to know your most effective hour and start preparation for PGIMER 2023 in those hours.
  • The next step for PGIMER preparations understanding the type of question asked in the exam. You can refer to the previous year's question papers and give as many mock tests as you can.
  • Understand the exam pattern and be through it as much as you can.
  • Start early and follow the timetable extensively.
  • Remember to clear your basics and build the concepts and primarily focus on high-yielding topics.
  • You have to practice on previous year's paper. Do avoid wild guesses and be aware of negative marks.
  • Always evaluate your growth and yourself and keep at least one month for revision.

  • General Category Students have to score in the range of 53-55%
  • SC/ST/OBC Category Students have to score in the range of 50-53%
